Snagov Lake is not only one of the largest lakes bordering Bucharest, but also the biggest lake in Romania. It’s a branch of the Ialonita River, with a length of 16km and a maximum depth that measures at 9m. The area is known for its incredible biodiversity, totalling at over 270 species of flora and fauna, out of which 170 are rare protected species.
The main attraction of the area is the Snagov Monastery. Situates on the only island on Lake Snagov, the Monastery wasfounded in the XV-th century and is known to be the final resting place of Vlad the Impaler. Legend says that Vlad the Impaler’s hidden grave cuts through the monastery’s altar, forever looked upon by a blazing candle and a portret of the former ruler of Wallachia.
One of the main attractions of the area is the Snagov Palace, built in the early 1930’s. Its architecture draws from a number of sketches by Barbu Delavrancea’s daughter, originally intended for Prince Nicolae of Romania. The palace has since served as Prince Nicolae’s summer retreat, as well as an important meeting point for politicans, writers and artists. During the 1980’s, under Communist reign, the palace was enlarged to such an extent that the only remaining original building can be found surrounding the main entrance, hallway and staircase.
The Snagov Forest is the last remaining piece of Codrilor Vlasiei, the forest that was once wrapped its arms all around Bucharest. The Snagov Forest ranges for no less than ten hectares and is home to a number of endagered flora, making it a protected natural reserve.
